But the four-times Olympic gold medallist cleared up any confusion this past weekend, proving she is as big a threat as ever one year out from the next Olympics. In addition to the all-around, Biles is favoured on the world stage for the vault and floor exercise golds due to her unmatched difficulty. The Russian women, competing as the Russian Olympic Committee due to a doping ban, captured team gold in Tokyo, leaving the United States to settle for silver. Contenders could include an unprecedented three Olympic all-around champions as 2012 winner Gabby Douglas, 27, recently announced plans to join Biles and 2020 champion Sunisa Lee, 20, on the road to Paris. The Paris squad will be selected at U.S. team trials at the end of June next year, a month before the 2024 Games.

July 19 (Reuters) - Russian and Belarusian gymnasts will be allowed to compete as "individual neutral athletes" at events organised by the governing body from next January, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) said on Wednesday. The FIG Executive Committee (EC) decided that Russian and Belarusian gymnasts may compete as long as they are not associated with their countries' gymnastics federations, their national federations and Olympic committees. "Any athlete wishing to obtain the status of 'individual neutral athlete' will have to apply to the FIG in accordance with the ad-hoc rules," FIG said in a statement. "Athletes who are granted this status will be eligible to participate in FIG sanctioned events from 1 January 2024." FIG President Morinari Watanabe added: "By accepting Russian and Belarusian gymnasts to participate in competitions as independent neutral athletes, the FIG is ensuring that the rights of all athletes are respected and is sending a message to the world that gymnastics is seeking peace."

CNN —Last month, Ukraine’s Vladyslav Heraskevych was a skeleton racer hurtling his way around the Yanqing Sliding Centre at the Beijing Winter Olympics. Heraskevych holds a sign with a message reading 'No war in Ukraine' during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics in February. Till the end, till the 24th of February, all Ukraine and the whole world expects that world war doesn’t start – it’s an absolutely crazy feeling. “I can’t understand why they stay quiet or why they support this war,” Heraskevych said. “They are very powerful tool of Russian politics and propaganda and when these people support war, a lot of people in Russia also start to support this war,” Heraskevych said.
